Seriously though, if anyone is interested in having a combination houseplant and snail jar, you can have a full setup for about $28 (sponge filter, USB pump, dechlorinator) in a one of those giant Utz cheeseball tubs or a big-ass vase (or a 2.5 gallon tank).
Sinking algae pellets or some additional fish food will run you a few bucks but you can use basically whatever. (I make my own “Snello” by mixing a some Knox gelatin into spinach baby food and then adding a crushed fruit Tums plus some assorted crushed fish foods.)
You can fancy it up by adding a heater for small volumes ($15) and an airstone to diffuse bubbles on the sponge filter ($3). For substrate I used sand and cheap lava rocks, but you can definitely source this for free (either get a scoop from a friend or gather sand from places you know are pesticide/herbicide free).
You can also spend money on plants or snails, but you can find common things like ramshorn snails (the prettiest “pest” snail), pothos, spider plants, zebra plants, and monstera for free if you get a cutting from a friend. I also re-grow things like spring onions or sweetpotato ends.
I siphon or scoop out about 25% of my snail water once a week to water other plants; the water is also safe for cats/dogs to ingest (though if they start using it as a preferred/primary water source you might want to cover it).
Anyway, who has snail jars??
