At any rate, I think the main problem is that single-parent homes tend to (many, but not all by any means) already be from a lower socioeconomic background and just continue that trend. It's not having a single parent that usually screws kids up--it's being poor to begin with.
I think a same-sex partnership (especially with extended family present) or stable nonmarried hetero partners can be excellent parents. Marriage isn't a ticket to happiness--don't half of them fail now anyway?
