The Kennewick School Board Should Resign

September 29 2011, 1:46pm

The people charged with running Kennewick's schools are too stupid—or too dishonest (take your pick)—to run a lemonade stand, much less a school system. Back in April Kennewick's school board voted to allow GSAs (gay/straight alliances) in Kennewick schools. Then in August Kennewick's school board reversed course and voted to kill all student groups in an effort to prevent the formation of a GSA. (No student group would be allowed to use the PA system, hang posters, raise money, or have their pictures appear in yearbooks.) Now the Kennewick school board has reversed their previous reversal and voted—once again—to allow GSAs. Check out the Kennewick school board members' excuses for their August vote to ban GSAs and all other student groups: "My daughter is a sophomore at Kamiakin and said, 'I cannot believe you guys killed Swing Club,' " said board member Brian Brooks. "It was not my intent to kill Swing Club." Board President Dawn Adams said that in the era of communication through Facebook, she didn't think students used the public address system, and didn't think student clubs were in the yearbook anyway—until she looked through some yearbooks after the Aug. 18 vote.... "I had no idea all those (club) pictures were in the yearbook." [Board member] White said she voted to restrict noncurricular clubs at the Aug. 18 meeting because she got confused by parliamentary procedure and was unclear about exactly what vote the board was being asked to take. "I emailed Dave Bond the next day and said I wanted to change my vote," she said. "I wish I had paid more attention in (August)." Seriously, Kennewick? These are the morons you want running your schools? [ Comment on this story ] [ Subscribe to the comments on this story ]
